My name is Micah Akpan.

I’m a Bootcamper at the Andela Bootcamp cycle 40, which started on the 7th of January 2019.

The first week of the Bootcamp is divided into 3 parts:

  • Day 1 (7th): Onboarding
  • Day 2 — Day 4: (8th — 10th): Self-learning clinic
  • Day 5 (11th): Review

Here is a brief narrative of my experiences on these days:

Onboarding

The onboarding session started with a session by Philip Newman, a Bootcamp LF (Learning Facilitator), who shared core ideas about the Andela Mission.

He also did an elaborative talk about the curriculum.

Andela’s mission is to advance human potential by powering today’s teams and investing in tomorrow’s leaders.

He spoke about the OKBBs of learning that is the guideline of the Curriculum, to aid our understanding.

OKBB is short for:

  • Observation
  • Knowledge
  • Beliefs
  • Behavior

We were then introduced to our LFAs (Learning Facilitator Assistants). I was assigned to Victor, along with three others (Obiora, Marvis and Nasiru).

Shortly after that, We had a discussion session with LF Akinwale Habib.

It was a very interesting and educative discussion session of the curriculum using the OKBB as guidelines. We had a question and answer session on concepts like Growth Mindset, Feedback and Ask questions.

It was a wonderful session, one thing I noticed was, when you have a house filled with people, be ready to take advantage of everyone’s knowledge.

I learned so much from listening to other people share their opinions.

Shortly after the session with Habib, Phil rounded up the Onboarding session.

We had a brief discussion with our LFA, who eagerly wanted to know more about us and share his story too.

Few minutes after that, Our project work was reviewed by Victor, who gave pieces of feedback.

The rest of the day was spent knowing my team members, implementing feedback received and working on the Bootcamp project.

Overall, here are some things I liked about the Andela Bootcamp (cycle 40) on the first day:

  • The Onboarding session was great — the discussion about Andela’s mission, and it was quite educative, even though we have seen it before in the website, more light was shed on it.
  • Another interesting thing is the VOF tracker, a web-based tool that makes managing outputs from Bootcampers everyday easy. Kudos to the Andela team that built this amazing tool.

Self-Learning

The 2nd to the 4th day of the Bootcamp is self-clinic based, where we are to submit learning outcomes every day and receive feedback, also work on our project.

It’s been a great learning activity, both from building the project and collaborating with other Bootcampers.

At each day, we are expected to submit blog posts and other observational feedback from our LFA.

Overall, I’d say it’s been a great learning experience.

I look forward to a more learning and impactful experience at the Bootcamp.
